Host a Virtual Screening Event

Maybe you’re “home” now, or maybe “home” is somewhere far away. We invite you to host a screening, and create a shared experience with your community that feels like home to you. That way, together, we are not alone.

The movie helped me feel again!

What is a Virtual Screening Event?

An online event that you organize for your community, organizations, friends, neighbors. By hosting a virtual screening, you are joining Dear Homeland’s official screening tour! You can host a virtual screening:

AT AN EVENT YOU’RE ALREADY PLANNING — at your conference, convention, retreats, classrooms, meetings.

AS A SPECIAL EVENT

  • On a special day or holiday—like for Latino Heritage Month, National Day of Immigrant Action

  • As a programmatic initiative—like a training series, town hall, educational workshop, classroom

  • To build alliances by bringing on other organizations as co-hosts

How Does Hosting a Screening Work?

  1. Request a screening here: Request a Screening Form

  2. Our team will reach out to you via email to answer any questions and confirm details.

  3. You create an event page, using a platform like Eventbrite or Event Groove to gather email addresses.

  4. You will receive a private screening link for only the event organizers to preview the film.

  5. The day before your event, we will send you a link to share with your registered attendees — one to the film and one to the Q&A.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. 4. How long is the film? 57 minutes

  2. What language is the film in? Spanish and English. You can choose a English subtitle, English caption, Spanish subtitle, or Spanish caption.

  3. Subtitles vs captions, what’s the difference? Captions are a text version of the spoken part of the film. Subtitles are a text version of all audio--the spoken and unspoken audio (description of sounds and music, etc.), they assume the viewer cannot hear any audio (i.e. is deaf or hard of hearing).

  4. Latine/x/a/o and Hispanic, why use both?

For this project, we are choosing to use multiple terms when referring to communities of Latin America and the Latin American diaspora including Latino, Latina, Latine, Latinx and Hispanic.

On Latinx, we use this term with intention  as a nod toward greater inclusion of women, LGBTQ+ and nonbinary Latinos. This term  has received widespread use on social media, viral millennial Latino media and academic writing.

The use of “Latinx” varies depending on cultural background, generation, location and proximity to academia. We understand that not everyone uses the term and we’ll continue to listen, assess and remain agile as terms to describe ourselves and our respective communities develop and shift over time.
